Proof of Financial Responsibility (Texas)

Spanish: Prueba de Responsabilidad Financiera (Texas)

Definition

Proof of Financial Responsibility in Texas refers to the document or electronic record a driver presents to demonstrate compliance with Texas Transportation Code Chapter 601, which requires every operator of a motor vehicle on public roads to be financially able to pay for damages or injuries they cause. The most common forms of proof include a current auto insurance ID card showing 30/60/25 minimum liability, an SR-22 certificate filed with the Department of Public Safety, a TexasSure electronic verification record, a $55,000 surety bond filed with TDI, or a Certificate of Self-Insurance for fleets of 25 or more vehicles. Texas drivers must carry valid proof at all times and present it during traffic stops, accidents, and vehicle registration. A first offense for failing to provide proof carries a fine of $175 to $350, and continued non-compliance can lead to license suspension and vehicle impoundment.
