Texas Transportation Code §601.072

Spanish: Código de Transporte de Texas §601.072

Definition

Texas Transportation Code §601.072 refers to the statute that establishes the minimum auto liability insurance limits every Texas driver must carry to operate a motor vehicle legally on public roads. The statute sets the required minimums at $30,000 per person for bodily injury, $60,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage — commonly shortened to 30/60/25. This is the baseline referenced whenever Texas requires proof of financial responsibility, including at license issuance, vehicle registration, traffic stops, and after an accident. Section 601.072 also governs SR-22 compliance: drivers who lose proof of financial responsibility after a covered event must maintain an SR-22 filing at these same minimum limits until released by the Department of Public Safety. Higher limits are strongly recommended, because the statutory minimums often fail to cover real-world medical bills and vehicle repair costs in a serious DFW-area accident.
