SR-22 Insurance

Spanish: Seguro SR-22

Definition

SR-22 Insurance refers to a certificate of financial responsibility that an insurance carrier files with the Texas Department of Public Safety on behalf of a driver to prove the driver maintains the state-required minimum liability coverage of 30/60/25. The SR-22 itself is not an insurance policy — it is an official filing attached to an underlying auto policy. Texas drivers are typically required to carry an SR-22 after a DWI conviction, driving without insurance, an at-fault accident while uninsured, or repeated traffic violations. Under Texas Transportation Code §601.072, the SR-22 requirement normally lasts two consecutive years from the date of conviction or violation, and coverage must remain continuous. If the underlying policy lapses, the insurer is required to file an SR-26 with DPS, which can restart the compliance period and trigger further license suspension.
