Definition

Minimum Coverage refers to the lowest level of auto insurance Texas law allows a driver to maintain and still operate a vehicle legally. Under Texas Transportation Code §601.072, the statutory minimum is 30/60/25 liability — $30,000 per person for bodily injury, $60,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. Minimum coverage pays only for injuries and damage the insured causes to others. It does not cover the insured's own vehicle, injuries, or medical bills. Minimum coverage is the least expensive option available, starting at $28 per month at A-LA for qualifying drivers in DFW, which makes it attractive for older paid-off vehicles. However, if the insured causes a serious accident, any damages exceeding the policy's 30/60/25 limits become the driver's personal financial responsibility and can result in wage garnishment or civil judgment.
