Texas DPS Electronic Filing
Spanish: Presentacion Electronica del DPS de Texas
Definition
Texas DPS Electronic Filing refers to the mandatory online system through which Texas auto insurance carriers transmit SR-22 certificates of financial responsibility, SR-26 cancellation notices, and related compliance forms directly to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Since 2009, Texas has required all SR-22 and SR-26 submissions to be filed electronically rather than by paper, allowing DPS to update a driver's record within 24 to 48 hours of the carrier transmission. Electronic filing eliminates mail delays that historically caused license suspensions even when drivers had valid coverage. When A-LA Auto Insurance binds an SR-22 policy at any of its 14 DFW offices, the filing is transmitted the same business day, and DPS confirms compliance shortly after. If the underlying policy lapses, the carrier must transmit the SR-26 within 10 days, which immediately reopens the driver's compliance gap.
