Definition

SR-22 Certificate refers to the document issued by an insurance carrier confirming that a Form SR-22 has been filed with the Texas Department of Public Safety to prove financial responsibility. The certificate lists the insured driver's name, policy number, effective date, and the carrier's NAIC identifier. Texas drivers are not typically required to carry the paper certificate, because DPS verifies SR-22 status electronically, but keeping a copy is useful for court appearances or license reinstatement hearings. The insurer transmits the filing to DPS electronically — the same business day when you buy through A-LA, often within about 30 minutes of binding; TxDPS then processes it on its own schedule (up to 21 business days), so check your status on the TxDPS License Eligibility page. If the underlying Texas minimum 30/60/25 liability policy terminates for any reason, the certificate is automatically voided by the carrier's required SR-26 filing. Drivers should request a replacement certificate if the original is lost, especially before contacting DPS for license reinstatement.
