Reinstatement

Spanish: Reinstalación

Definition

Reinstatement refers to restoring a lapsed or cancelled Texas auto insurance policy to active status, typically after a payment was missed or a renewal deadline passed. Whether reinstatement is available depends on the carrier and how long the policy has been inactive. Many Texas carriers allow reinstatement within 10–30 days of cancellation, usually requiring payment of the past-due premium, a reinstatement fee of $10–$50, and sometimes a signed statement of no loss confirming the vehicle had no accidents during the gap. Coverage during the lapsed period is typically not restored — reinstatement covers going forward only. For SR-22 drivers, reinstating after a cancellation may require filing a new SR-22 and restarting the two-year compliance period as tracked by the Texas Department of Public Safety. If too much time has passed, the insured must instead purchase a new policy, which may come at a higher premium due to the lapse.
