Non-Standard Driver

Spanish: Conductor No Estándar

Definition

Non-Standard Driver refers to a Texas auto insurance applicant whose driving record, insurance history, or personal profile prevents standard carriers from offering a policy at their preferred rates. Typical non-standard factors include a recent DWI or DUI, multiple at-fault accidents, a license suspension, a long insurance lapse, or a lack of US credit history. Non-standard drivers are served by specialty carriers that underwrite higher-risk books of business, often without credit-based insurance scores. Premiums are generally higher than standard rates but remain competitive across the 35+ specialty carriers operating in Texas. Non-standard is not a legal or regulatory classification — it is an industry term describing the market segment. Many non-standard carriers offer same-day SR-22 filing, monthly payment plans, and acceptance of alternative IDs such as a Mexican Matrícula Consular. After several claim-free years, a non-standard driver often qualifies to return to a standard carrier at lower rates.
