Non-Standard Auto Insurance

Spanish: Seguro de Auto No Estándar

Definition

Non-Standard Auto Insurance refers to the Texas insurance market segment serving drivers who do not qualify for standard-carrier pricing due to their driving record, insurance history, or profile. The non-standard market is served by specialty carriers such as Progressive, Kemper, National General, Bristol West, Anchor General, Bluefire, and American Access Casualty — all filed and regulated by the Texas Department of Insurance. Non-standard carriers generally accept drivers with recent DWIs, multiple tickets, at-fault accidents, license lapses, foreign driver licenses, Matrícula Consular, or ITIN numbers. Typical features include same-day coverage, monthly payment plans starting with a low down payment, SR-22 filings at no extra charge, and no credit check. Premiums are higher than standard-market rates but remain competitive across the 35+ non-standard carriers active in the DFW market. Drivers can typically graduate back to standard pricing after three to five years of clean record and continuous coverage.
