Named Insured

Spanish: Asegurado Nombrado

Definition

Named Insured refers to the primary person or business listed on the declarations page of a Texas auto insurance policy as the policyholder. The named insured has the authority to request policy changes, add or remove drivers, adjust coverage, file claims, collect claim payments, and cancel the policy. Spouses are often listed as additional named insureds to share these rights. Other household drivers are typically listed as rated drivers rather than named insureds — they are covered while driving the insured vehicle but cannot administratively modify the policy. When a named insured passes away, Texas law permits coverage to continue for the surviving spouse or executor for a limited time while the policy is transferred. Non-owner drivers — people covered only when driving someone else's vehicle — are classified as named non-owners, a specialized designation. Only individuals physically residing in the same Texas household as the named insured are generally eligible for coverage.
