Definition
Named Non-Owner refers to a person listed on a Texas auto insurance policy who does not own a vehicle but needs liability coverage for driving cars owned by others — typically borrowed, occasionally rented, or briefly operated vehicles. Named non-owner policies provide 30/60/25 minimum liability limits or higher, satisfy Texas financial responsibility requirements, and can support an SR-22 filing when required. These policies do not cover collision, comprehensive, or damage to the borrowed vehicle itself, because no specific vehicle is insured — the car's own policy is typically primary for physical damage. Named non-owner coverage is typically less expensive than a standard policy because no vehicle is rated, but it is restrictive: it does not cover company vehicles, regularly used household vehicles, or a vehicle the driver has access to most of the time. It is most common for drivers with license reinstatement requirements who rely on rideshare, borrowed cars, or public transit.
