International Driver's License

Spanish: Licencia de Conducir Internacional

Definition

International Driver's License, more accurately called an International Driving Permit, refers to a translated credential issued in the driver's home country that certifies the holder is licensed to drive there. The International Driving Permit, or IDP, is valid only alongside the original foreign license and only for a limited period — usually up to one year in Texas. Many Texas non-standard auto insurance carriers accept an IDP plus the underlying foreign license as valid identification for policy issuance, alongside a Matrícula Consular or ITIN. Texas law permits non-resident drivers to operate vehicles using a valid foreign license or IDP for up to 90 days or one year depending on visa status, after which a Texas driver license is required. For insurance purposes, the IDP helps underwriters verify the driver's licensed status in their home country, but it does not substitute for a Texas license for long-term residents. A-LA can issue IDP-based policies at any DFW office.
