Key findings

  1. Fewer crashes, more deaths. Tarrant County crashes fell from 32,507 in 2019 to 28,074 in 2024 (−13.6%), but traffic deaths rose from 172 to 201 (+16.9%). Statewide, crashes changed −1.4% and deaths +14.6%. (TxDOT report 13)
  2. About 1 in 4 crashes involves a distracted driver. Distraction was a factor in 6,794 Tarrant County crashes in 2024, 24.2% of the total, compared with 16.5% statewide. Speed was involved in 26.6% (28.6% statewide). (TxDOT report 32; report 22) These shares depend on how officers record contributing factors.
  3. Texas's top hail county. NOAA lists 482 hail reports on 91 days in Tarrant County from 2015 to 2025, the most of Texas's 254 counties and 3.4% of the state total. 104 reports were golf ball size or larger, and the largest stone was 5.0 inches. The busiest year was 2024, with 106 reports. (NOAA NCEI)
  4. A large Spanish-speaking driving public. 161,006 Tarrant County households speak Spanish at home (20.6%), and 29,901 (±1,625) of them are limited-English households, 18.6% of Spanish-speaking households (Texas: 19.2%). (Census ACS Table C16002)
  5. SR-22 cost estimates sit just below Dallas County. A-LA's licensed agents estimate liability-only owner SR-22 coverage in Tarrant County at about $88 to $158 a month in 2026. These are typical estimates, not quotes. See SR-22 costs in Tarrant County for the details.

What this means for Tarrant County drivers

  • Hail damage needs comprehensive coverage. TDI says comprehensive (other than collision) coverage pays for damage from something other than a collision, such as hail. Liability-only does not fix your own car. (TDI Auto Insurance Guide)
  • Put the phone away. With about 1 in 4 county crashes involving distraction, hands-free driving is the simplest risk you control.
  • Ask for service in your language. A-LA has 9 offices in Fort Worth and Arlington with bilingual English and Spanish agents. Find an A-LA office.
  • Carry at least Texas 30/60/25. Texas requires $30,000 per person and $60,000 per crash for injuries and $25,000 for property damage (Tex. Transp. Code §601.072).

Methodology and limitations

Crashes. County totals, deaths, serious injuries, speed-involved and distracted-driver crashes are copied from TxDOT's Texas Motor Vehicle Crash Statistics reports 13, 22 and 32 for 2019 and 2024. Contributing factors depend on how officers record them, which can differ between agencies.

Hail. We counted rows with event type “Hail” in NOAA NCEI Storm Events bulk files for 2015–2025. A report is one event record for one county, so counts show how often hail was recorded, not damage. Fast-growing counties have more spotters.

Language. Household counts and 90% margins of error are from Census ACS 2020–2024 5-year Table C16002. City rows are for the cities of Fort Worth and Arlington.

Cost estimates. ZIP and SR-22 ranges are typical estimates prepared by A-LA's licensed agents from quoting across 35+ carriers. They are not a statistical sample of policies and are not quotes. No customer data is used on this page.
