Definition
A Rider refers to an optional add-on attached to a Texas auto insurance policy that expands coverage beyond what the base policy provides. In Texas auto insurance practice, rider is used nearly interchangeably with endorsement, though some carriers reserve the term for add-ons that enhance protection rather than simply modify existing terms. Common auto insurance riders include roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, custom-equipment coverage for aftermarket stereos or wheels, gap insurance, and new-car replacement. Each rider is described on the declarations page with its own premium charge, limit, and deductible if applicable. Riders can be added at policy issue, mid-term as a policy change, or at renewal. Because rider language varies by carrier, drivers should ask their agent to explain the exact scope of any rider — particularly the difference between a rider that adds coverage and one that simply restates existing terms in clearer language.
