Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist (Spanish: Cobertura UM/UIM)

Spanish: Cobertura UM/UIM (Conductor Sin Aseguranza o Con Aseguranza Insuficiente)

Definition

Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM), called cobertura UM/UIM in Spanish, is auto insurance that pays the insured driver's medical bills, lost wages, and property damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or inadequate coverage. Under Texas Insurance Code §1952.101, every auto policy must offer UM/UIM, and drivers must reject it in writing to opt out. Texas has one of the highest rates of uninsured drivers in the country — estimated 14% to 20% — making UM/UIM essential.
