Property Damage Liability

Spanish: Daños a la Propiedad

Definition

Property Damage Liability refers to the portion of a Texas auto policy that pays to repair or replace vehicles, buildings, fences, or other property the insured driver damages in an at-fault accident. Texas law requires at least $25,000 in property damage coverage — the third number in the state's 30/60/25 minimum limits. That amount can be exhausted quickly: the average new vehicle in Texas transacts well above $25,000, and a single at-fault collision with a late-model truck or SUV can easily exceed the statutory minimum. Property damage also covers damage to non-vehicle property such as garage doors, guardrails, mailboxes, commercial signage, or utility poles. It does not cover the insured's own vehicle, which requires separate collision coverage. Most DFW drivers benefit from raising property damage limits to $50,000 or $100,000, which typically adds only a few dollars per month in premium.
