Liability Only Car Insurance in Texas
The 30/60/25 coverage Texas law requires, and nothing you don't need. From $28/mo for qualifying drivers, with same-day proof of insurance.
What Is Liability Only Car Insurance?
Liability only car insurance is the minimum coverage Texas law requires. It pays for injuries and property damage you cause to other people, up to 30/60/25 limits. It does not repair or replace your own car. At A-LA, liability only starts at $28/month for qualifying drivers, with same-day proof of insurance.
The Texas 30/60/25 Minimum, Explained
Texas Transportation Code §601.072 sets the least liability coverage every driver must carry. A liability-only policy at the minimum carries exactly these three limits:
The most the policy pays for injuries to any one person you hurt in a crash you cause.
The most the policy pays for all injuries in one crash you cause.
The most the policy pays for the other driver's car or other property you damage.
If a crash you cause costs more than these limits, you are personally responsible for the difference. Higher limits cost more per month, but many drivers choose them for that reason. An agent can price the minimum and a higher limit side by side.
Liability Only vs. Full Coverage
| What it pays for | Liability only | Full coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Injuries you cause to other people | ||
| Damage you cause to other people's cars and property | ||
| Repairs to your own car after a crash you cause (collision) | ||
| Theft, hail, flood, fire or vandalism to your car (comprehensive) | ||
| Meets the Texas legal minimum (30/60/25) | ||
| Accepted by a lender or leasing company on a financed car | ||
| Monthly price | Lowest legal option | Higher (adds collision and comprehensive) |
“Full coverage” is liability plus collision and comprehensive. For a deeper comparison, read our guide to full coverage vs. liability in Texas.
Who Liability Only Fits, and Who It Doesn't
Usually a good fit
- Your car is paid off and older, and you could replace it yourself.
- You need the lowest legal price to register the car or get back on the road.
- You need an SR-22 and want the filing on the least expensive policy (SR-22 insurance).
- You had a lapse and need proof of insurance today.
Usually not the right fit
- Your car is financed or leased: the lender will require full coverage.
- The car is newer or worth more than you could afford to lose.
- You depend on the car for work and couldn't go without it after a crash.
- You don't own a car at all: you want non-owner car insurance instead.
