Renewal

Spanish: Renovación

Definition

Renewal refers to the extension of an existing Texas auto insurance policy into a new policy period at the end of the current term. Most Texas carriers issue six-month policies, so renewal typically occurs twice per year. At renewal, the carrier re-evaluates the driver's record, any claims filed during the term, updated rating factors, and market conditions — and then issues either a renewal offer at the new premium or a non-renewal notice. Under Texas Insurance Code §551.105, carriers must provide at least 30 days written notice before non-renewing a policy, giving the driver time to secure replacement coverage and avoid a lapse. At renewal, the insured should review the declarations page for accuracy and may compare quotes from other carriers, because rates can shift significantly across the 35+ companies operating in the DFW market. Paying the renewal by the due date preserves continuous coverage and avoids SR-26 filings for SR-22 drivers.
