Why Your Texas Policy Is Not Enough in Mexico
A lot of San Antonio families drive to Mexico to see relatives, for holidays or for a long weekend, and many assume the policy they carry in Texas goes with them. It usually does not do the job. Most Texas auto policies do not provide the liability coverage Mexico requires, and U.S. liability policies are not recognized south of the border.
That matters most after an accident. Without a Mexican-licensed policy, an accident can result in vehicle impoundment and detention until financial responsibility is proven. The fix is simple: buy a separate Mexican auto policy for the days you will be driving there, and check the territory section of your own Texas policy for details on what it does and does not do outside the United States.

What an A-LA Mexico Tourist Policy Covers
A-LA writes Mexico tourist auto policies for cars, trucks, motorhomes and trailers, with flexible terms from one day to one year. Coverage typically includes:
Mexican civil liability
Bodily-injury and property-damage liability you cause to others, valid throughout Mexico, not just the border zone.
Legal aid and bail bond
A Mexican attorney and bail-bond assistance if you are detained after an accident, included on most policies.
Medical payments
Medical expenses for you and your passengers after a covered accident in Mexico.
Your vehicle and roadside help
Collision, theft and total-loss protection for your own vehicle, plus 24/7 roadside assistance and towing anywhere in Mexico.
Which of these you carry depends on the policy you choose. The agent explains the options side by side, in English or Spanish, before you pay.
Driving from San Antonio to Mexico: Plan the Coverage Before I-35
For most San Antonio drivers, the trip south starts on I-35 toward Laredo. That means two different sets of insurance rules on one trip. From your driveway to the border, and again on the way home, you are driving in Texas, where you must carry at least 30/60/25 liability under Texas Transportation Code §601.072. Once you cross, the Mexican policy is what protects you.
The easiest way to avoid a gap is to buy the Mexican policy in San Antonio before you leave, with the start date set to the day you cross. You arrive at the border with the policy already in hand instead of shopping for it at the last minute.
Going beyond the border area? Mexico can require a separate vehicle permit to drive deeper into the country. That permit is not insurance and A-LA does not issue it; check the current rules before you travel.
Before You Leave San Antonio: A Short Checklist
Keep your Texas policy active
Do not cancel or let it lapse for the trip. Driving without insurance in Texas is a fine-only misdemeanor under §601.191: $175 to $350 for a first conviction and up to $1,000 after that.
Buy the Mexican policy for every day you will drive there
Match the dates to your trip. If you cross often, ask about a longer term.
List every vehicle and trailer
A trailer or a second vehicle needs to be on the Mexican policy too.
Carry the Mexico ID card
Keep it printed and on your phone. The 24-hour claims number is on the card.
Check with your lender if the vehicle is financed or leased
Some lenders have rules about taking a financed vehicle out of the country. Ask before you go.
