Mexico Tourist Auto Insurance
Spanish: Seguro de Auto Turista para México
Definition
Mexico Tourist Auto Insurance refers to a separate insurance policy required by Mexican law for any US-registered vehicle driven inside Mexico. A standard Texas auto policy, including full coverage, does not extend across the border — Mexican authorities require proof of a policy written by a Mexican-licensed insurer before any US vehicle is permitted to drive beyond the border zone. Required coverage includes Mexican liability for bodily injury and property damage caused to Mexican residents, with optional add-ons for theft, collision, medical payments, and legal assistance. Policies are typically sold on a short-term basis — one day to several months — or as annual multi-trip coverage for frequent border crossers. Driving uninsured in Mexico after an accident can result in vehicle impoundment and detention until financial responsibility is proven, regardless of the driver's nationality. DFW drivers traveling south from Texas commonly purchase Mexico tourist coverage through A-LA before leaving for the border.
