Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay)

Spanish: Pagos Médicos (MedPay)

Definition

Medical Payments Coverage, commonly called MedPay, refers to an optional Texas auto insurance add-on that pays reasonable and necessary medical expenses for the insured and passengers after an accident — regardless of fault. Unlike PIP, MedPay does not cover lost wages, childcare, or funeral expenses; it is strictly a medical benefit. Typical MedPay limits in Texas range from $1,000 to $10,000 per person, with $5,000 being common. MedPay is useful because it pays quickly, covers the insured even when riding in someone else's vehicle or as a pedestrian struck by a car, and often fills deductible and copay gaps left by the insured's health insurance. Texas carriers may offer MedPay as an alternative or supplement to PIP. A driver may elect to carry both if they want broader coverage for passenger medical expenses after a DFW-area accident.
