New to Texas? How to Get Car Insurance as a Recent Arrival or Immigrant

Moving to Texas Is Exciting. Figuring Out Insurance Shouldn't Kill That.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people move to Texas — from other states, from other countries, and from across Latin America. If you're new to the state, you need car insurance to legally drive. But the process of getting it can feel designed to confuse you.

The good news: if you're in DFW, you're in one of the most competitive non-standard insurance markets in the country. Getting covered — regardless of your documentation situation — is very doable. Here's how.

What Documents Do You Need?

Requirements vary by carrier. Here's the general picture:

If You Have a Valid Texas Driver's License

Congratulations — the standard market is open to you. Your rate will be based on your driving history (which, if you're new, may be thin). Thin history typically results in moderate rates, not penalized ones.

If You Have an Out-of-State License

Most carriers accept an out-of-state license. You typically have 90 days from establishing Texas residency to convert to a Texas DL. In the interim, your out-of-state license is valid and will be accepted by most insurers.

If You Have a Foreign License (Mexican, etc.)

Many non-standard carriers accept foreign licenses. A Mexican Matrícula Consular is widely accepted at non-standard agencies in DFW. Bring the license and a government-issued photo ID.

If You Have No Driver's License

You can still insure a vehicle you own. You'll need a primary driver who is licensed. See our separate guide on car insurance without a license in Texas.

What About Undocumented Immigrants?

You are not required to provide immigration status to purchase insurance. What you need is a vehicle identification number (VIN), proof of ownership or financial interest in the vehicle, and a photo ID. A passport (including foreign passports) is accepted by most non-standard carriers. An ITIN can also substitute for a Social Security Number where one is requested.

What About International Driving History?

If you've been driving for 10 years in Mexico or another country, you have a driving history — but U.S. insurers often can't verify it. From their perspective, you're an unverified driver, which typically results in higher rates than a seasoned U.S. driver.

Over time, as you build a U.S. insurance and driving record, rates improve. The first year is usually the most expensive.

Do You Need a Social Security Number?

No. Many non-standard carriers do not require an SSN. They may ask for it (it helps verify identity), but the absence of one should not disqualify you from getting coverage.

If a carrier absolutely requires an SSN and you don't have one, go to a different carrier. There are plenty of options in DFW that don't have this requirement.

Understanding Your Coverage Options

Texas minimum: 30/60/25 liability. This is the legal floor and the starting point for the lowest-cost option.

Full coverage: required if your vehicle is financed. Even if it's not required, consider full coverage if your vehicle is worth $7,000+.

Uninsured motorist: Texas has a high rate of uninsured drivers. Adding UM/UIM for $10–$25/month is strongly recommended.

What to Expect at a Non-Standard Agency

Walk in. A bilingual agent will:

Review your documents.

Run quotes across multiple carriers to find the best rate for your profile.

Explain coverage options in plain language.

Bind coverage the same day and give you a proof of insurance card immediately.

The process typically takes 20–45 minutes for a new customer.

Establishing a U.S. Insurance Record

One of the best things you can do when you first arrive in Texas is to get insured and stay insured, even at a modest level. Every year of continuous coverage builds your record, which incrementally lowers your rate.

Think of the first few years as an investment. You're buying yourself into the standard market by demonstrating consistent, claim-free coverage.

The Bottom Line

New to Texas? Getting car insurance is doable regardless of your documentation situation. Non-standard carriers in DFW serve new arrivals and immigrants every day. Bring your documents, walk in, and you can drive legally the same day.
