Just Moved to Texas? Auto Insurance & License Checklist

Last updated: April 2026 · Reviewed by Sean Gilani, TDI License #3107286

Welcome to Texas. You have 30 days to inspect, register, and switch your auto insurance — and 90 days to transfer your driver's license. Here's the step-by-step DFW newcomer playbook so you don't pay double or get fined.

Quick Answer

New Texas residents have 30 days to pass state inspection, switch their auto insurance to a Texas policy with 30/60/25 minimum liability, and register their vehicle. License transfer must happen within 90 days. A-LA Auto Insurance writes Texas policies same-day for new residents — no credit check, 35+ carriers compared, 15 DFW offices. Call (866) 252-6116.

Two Deadlines That Matter: 30 Days and 90 Days

Texas gives newcomers two clocks. The 30-day clock applies to your vehicle: you must pass a state safety inspection, switch to a Texas auto insurance policy, and register your car at the county tax office within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. The 90-day clock applies to your driver's license: you can drive on a valid out-of-state license for up to 90 days, but after that you must transfer to a Texas license at any TxDPS driver license office.

Most newcomers focus on the license transfer (longer deadline, more visible) and overlook the 30-day insurance switch — which is exactly the deadline that costs people the most money. Continuing on out-of-state coverage past 30 days exposes you to a denied claim, a non-renewal, and a possible coverage gap on your record. A-LA writes Texas policies same-day with no credit check.

The 6-Step New Resident Checklist

In order. Each step depends on the previous one.

Within 30 Days — Pass Texas Vehicle Inspection

Texas requires a state safety inspection before you can register. The inspection costs $7 to $40 depending on county and vehicle. Bring your out-of-state title, proof of liability insurance with Texas 30/60/25 minimums, and your driver's license.

Within 30 Days — Switch to a Texas Auto Insurance Policy

Your existing out-of-state policy is technically valid until you become a Texas resident. Once you take a Texas job, register to vote, or accept Texas residency, your insurer can refuse claims. Switch within 30 days. A-LA writes Texas policies same-day, no credit check.

Within 30 Days — Register Your Vehicle With Texas DMV

After inspection, register at your county tax office. Bring inspection report, out-of-state title, proof of Texas insurance, and ID. Cost: $50.75 base registration plus county fees plus 6.25% sales tax (or $90 new-resident tax if you registered in another state in the last 30 days).

Within 90 Days — Get a Texas Driver's License

Texas allows you to drive on a valid out-of-state license for 90 days. To convert, visit any Texas DPS driver license office, pass the vision test, surrender your old license, pay $33, and pass a written test if your previous license expired more than 2 years ago.

Anytime — Update Your Address Everywhere

Texas law requires you to update your address with TxDPS within 30 days of moving. Insurance, voter registration, USPS forwarding, and your bank also need updating. Mismatched addresses can void claims.

Don't Skip — Texas Liability Minimums Are Higher Than Most States

Texas requires 30/60/25 — $30,000 per person bodily injury, $60,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage. Many out-of-state policies (especially from California, Florida, Mississippi, or Pennsylvania) carry lower minimums and won't transfer cleanly.

Texas Auto Insurance Costs vs. Where You Came From

Texas auto insurance averages $1,820 per year for full coverage and $670 per year for state-minimum liability based on Texas Department of Insurance 2026 data. That's slightly above the national average of $1,650 due to higher minimum liability requirements, dense urban traffic in DFW and Houston, hailstorm exposure, and a statewide uninsured-driver rate around 14%.

If you moved from California, New York, Florida, Louisiana, or Michigan, you'll usually save 15% to 30% in Texas. If you moved from Maine, Wyoming, Idaho, Vermont, or New Hampshire, expect to pay 20% to 40% more — those states have lower density, lower minimums, and lower medical costs. Coming from a no-fault state like Michigan or New York also means re-learning how Texas's at-fault tort system works for claims.

A-LA shops 35+ Texas-licensed carriers including non-standard insurers that don't run credit. New residents without Texas address history often get penalized by credit-based pricing models — going with a non-credit-check carrier through A-LA in your first 12 months can save 15%–35%, then you can re-shop with standard carriers once your Texas credit history is established.

Texas Minimum Liability — and Why That's Often Not Enough

Texas requires every driver to carry at least 30/60/25 — $30,000 per person bodily injury, $60,000 per accident bodily injury, and $25,000 property damage. These limits became the new floor in January 2025 (raised from 30/60/25 historically with brief periods at lower levels). For a typical newer SUV or truck total loss in DFW, the $25,000 property damage minimum runs out fast — meaning the at-fault driver pays the difference out of pocket.

Most DFW residents carry 50/100/50 or 100/300/100. The cost difference between state minimum and 100/300/100 is often only $20 to $40 per month — meaningful protection. We also strongly recommend uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage given Texas's high uninsured-driver rate. Texas insurers must offer UM/UIM in writing and you can decline it in writing — but most newcomers don't realize they have that choice.

A-LA agents walk every new resident through limit selection in plain English. We don't push higher coverage just to sell more — we explain what each limit actually covers given your vehicle value, savings, and DFW driving exposure. Bilingual English/Spanish at every office.

What to Bring to A-LA for Same-Day Texas Insurance

  • Driver's license — your current out-of-state license is fine for the first 90 days.
  • Vehicle VIN — listed on title, registration, dashboard, or driver-side door jamb.
  • Prior insurance declarations page — helps us match coverage and credit you for continuous coverage history (lower rate).
  • Texas address — lease, utility bill, or piece of mail at your new Texas residence.
  • Drivers in household — names, dates of birth, license numbers/states for everyone over age 14.

Walk into any of our 15 DFW offices with these and we typically have a Texas policy bound, proof of insurance emailed/texted, and Texas ID cards in hand within 30 to 45 minutes. You can then proceed straight to the inspection station and county tax office to register your vehicle.
